Yes, don't use kernel.org kernel's on RHEL. RHEL's kernel is a sort of
hybrid between 2.4 and 2.6. Using a vanilla 2.4 means you lose all those
advantages plus, as you've found, it just doesn't work. I'd recommend
patching the RHEL3 kernel tree with the minimal fix for your SCSI tape
issue and using that. You should also submit a bugzilla report to RedHat
and they may include it in the next kernel errata. Maybe you should offer
more issues on your SCSI issues here...
