If the processor is HT enabled the installer installs the SMP kernel automagically now. It's been going on for a while and I have seen a lot of it. It does no harm and does not seem to harm performance in a palpable way... but I have no hard numbers or anything to prove or disprove that assertion. It just seems to work.
