Why do you think you should be running named? The named.conf file you
mentioned below is for logwatch, not the one used by the named process.
Is this system a DNS server? If so, you should have files under
/var/named - my suspicion is that you don't and so named will not start.
Have you checked /var/log/messages after attempting to start named? What
does it report?

Sorry to keep pestering on this. I still can't seem to get named
(bind?)
running. There is no named.pid file, even though I added named to the
startup protocol for run level 3. Below I have noted what I did in
response
to Ed Wilts' advice. Quite possibly, I haven't done enough or haven't
understood what I did in the first place. The system isn't checking in
with
RedHat and the problem seems to be at my end. It happened after the U4
upgrade.

Thanks. It wasn't running and wasn't configured to run at run level 3
so I
added it. After a re-boot it still does not offer the graphic icon for
the
Red Hat Network Alert icon, and when I click on the Red Hat Network
icon,
nothing happens.
Interestingly, the service is shown to be included in the level 3
startup,
but it does not show that it is running when I do a restart or a stop
and
then a start.

To see if it should be running:
# /sbin/chkconfig --list named
To see if it is currently runnning:
# /sbin/service named status
To start it if it isn't:
# /sbin/service named start
