U4 kernel sound?

Not that it's detrimental to our production work environment, but once
we upgraded to the U4 kernel (specifically 2.4.21-27.0.1), sound stopped
working in Quake 3 and Enemy Territory.  Sound works fine in xmms.

Any ideas what might have changed to cause these gaming problems?
