I, too, read that paper, and while it was interesting, couldn't actually 
make a difference with any of the settings.

My MySQL machine was swapping out way way too much (MySQL was using 3GB, 
only real process running, on an 8GB machine.  More than 4GB were 
swapped out.  Ugh.)

Finally turned swap off entirely, and performance is much better.  Your 
mileage may vary.
