I did some digging through the GConf documentation at
http://www.gnome.org/learn/admin-guide/2.4/. I made two changes in
/etc/gconf/2/path: line 15 to
include "$(HOME)/.gconf.path-2.2"
and line 18 to
xml:readwrite:$(HOME)/.gconf-2.2
In the original, neither line had the -2.2 on the end. This seems to
work, in that I have independent Gnome 2.2 (RHEL) and Gnome 2.4 (FC1)
desktops now. So, changes to one desktop don't propagate to the other,
but at least I can use both systems.
The only real hitch is that Evolution config files aren't being shared;
at least, RHEL asked me to reconfigure my Evolution servers.
I hope this helps someone else.
