For PHP, I pretty much use RHEL's version since it's fairly up to date
(4.3.2 vs. 4.3.7 current) although I have needed to compile the mssql php
module and add it in. I was able to rebuild RedHat's SRPM in order to get
that module. For MySQL I stick with RHEL's 3.2 rpms unless it's a heavy
duty database server in which case I use MySQL.com's RPMs. The MySQL.com
4.0.x RPMs install and run quite well on RHEL3. Use MySQL-shared-compat
in place of MySQL-shared and your apps built against RHEL's MySQL should
have no problems at all. In general, the further you stray from stock
RHEL, the more likely you are to experience wierd, time consuming issues.
Sometimes, it's just neccessary though.
