I don't know about such problems.  We use Red Carpet to push out
complete updates including kernel installations, etc.  Red Carpet 1.X
had issues with installing the kernel, but it's now on version 2.2.x and
it's solid.

We manage ~1,800 nodes with Red Carpet today.
