If you do mke2fs -O sparse_super and have a large enough partition
(several GB) on any recent Linux, it'll fail with the same message.
Currently, the sparse_super feature is turned on by default (unless
mke2fs is run on a system with a pre-2.2 Linux kernel). It seems like
any ext2/ext3 filesystems created during the installation procedure of
recent RedHat/Fedora Linux versions cannot be resized using parted.
