How to implement hugetlb

After much confusing/conflicting research, I have a couple of simple
questions.  What is the best way to set up hugetlb/hugepages?  Is there
a difference between putting a line in grub (hugepages=xxxxM) or using
sysctl.conf (not sure of param(s) on this one)?
