It's been working fine for me. with a pair of Emulex LP8000 HBAs on a
DL380 G1.

Please define "it fails".  What error message do you get with a -v?

I've got the following entry in /etc/modules.conf:
alias scsi_hostadapter1 lpfcdd

On my system, scsi_hostadapter is the cpqarray for the onboard SmartArray.

You will have issues at boot time since the driver won't automatically
load at boot time.  I resolved that with an initrd. 

I'm running 2.4.21-15.Esmp
