I'm quite astonished that flock-support is suddenly gone. I didn't see 
anything about this in U2 relnotes, U1 relnotes has locking-issues 
mentioned but seem to be unrelated to this. Or am I blind?

It's like taking your car to regular maintenance and the guys removing the 
steering wheel because it's no longer supported by the manufacturer.
