The new 2.4.21-20.ELsmp kernel seems to go spend all its time in kswapd
when doing backup using tar over the network - is this a known problem?
The problem goes away when reverting to the 2.4.21-15.0.4.ELsmp kernel.
Even though kswapd uses most of the cpu the swapspace is hardly used.
This is on a Dell 2650 with a PERC4/SC RAID controller using the megaraid2 driver.
The machine runs Cyrus imapd and only tar is active during the night when
this happened.
