We run standard 32-bit RHEL 3 AS on 2-way Opterons without issues. This
obviously uses the i686 SMP kernel. We also run antiquated RH 7.3-based
distro on 2-way Opterons for tools that don't support RHEL yet. We
found the running 32-bit RH Linux 7.3 on Opteron blows the pants off
Xeon in certain scenarios (EDA apps, especially).
We only use 64-bit RHEL 3 AS when the tools can take advantage of the
platform (i.e. single process EDA simulation needs 12-16GB RAM).
