I thought you were able to run a 32 bit OS on top of the 64 bit processors
with no problems, its just that it wouldn't take advantage of the 64 bit
processor's abilities? Someone who knows better might have something more
educated to say though.

Running a 32 bit kernel on a 64 bit userland (and vice versa) doesn't
work. Someone at work had a few bright ideas, none of which panned
out.
