Thanks, Steven, for the pointer.
I checked our existing set up but found there is only one
instance of gtk2 installed.
I did try to replace gtk2 and gtk+, but the problem persists.
But during the (re)installation of gtk2, it complains:
g_module_open() failed for
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.2.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so:
/usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0: undefined symbol: deflate
I checked
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.2.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so
and it is part of the gtk2 package.
But not sure why we have /usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0.
When queried, it is said not owned by any package.
By removing the libpng* files under /usr/local/lib, I can
start the gnome-session with the icons appearing now.
So got the problem resolved this way.
But many thanks for the pointer. This is very useful indeed.
Regards,
Peter

Peter,
You might want to look at the following thread from the fedora-test
list where someone had the same problem.
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2004-March/msg00665.htm
l
One person had a bad package upgrade leaving two different gtk2
instances.
Regards,
Stephen
