What
you should have done was to leave the default settings alone and simply defined
a smart relay host. That leaves sendmail running as a daemon for the local host
ONLY and sends external mail thru the relay...

I had to use brackets '[a.b.c.d]' around the IP address to the mail gateway.
Is masquerading related to email relaying? I have changed my submit.mc file, using the ip and/or hostname of the mailhost, and I still get the same error. I haven't tried masquerading. I've also tried shutting down sendmail, and still get the same error.
I've also tried the FEATURE(`nullclient',`$m') option in sendmail.mc, to no avail (I had to remove the MAILER entries, because I got errors using the m4 macro). I still get the same error.
Can it be a security issue? Some configuration in the /etc/pam.d files?
I'm a bit lost right now... :(
What I need is to be able to send an receive mails locally, and to be able to send (but not receive) mails to a remote mail server.
Thanks for your patience.
