What do you mean by "it didn't work"? Do the mails queue?
If so, what does the output of "mailq" show? What messages are you seeing in
/var/log/maillog?
How is your name resolution set up? Are you using DNS? Does
your DNS server have MX records for the external domain(s) you are trying to
send to?
Try:
$ dig remote_domain mx
What do you see?

I've already tried that (and can do it again anytime). It didn't work.
I've tried sending a local mail with the -v option, just to see the difference, and I could see the smtp protocol. The external mails don't even reach the remote mail server, but I can ping it, and connect by telnet.
