Is there any way to force the GUI-mode for a PXE/FTP install?

I was able to use the very same install process and get a real minimal
install (about 550MB), using RHEL3 U3 in the past: I cannot remember
if it was Text-mode or GUI-mode, but something definitely changed with
U4 (maybe a bug?).

GUI-mode installs are available via NFS, hard disk and CD with FTP and HTTP reliant on text mode.

It does seem odd that a "no packages" installation is so much larger than minimal. This is particularly true in light of the following

RHEL4-U0-x86 (AS) GUI-install minimal packages = 648M
RHEL4-U0-x86 (AS) text-install no package = 648M

Even though RHEL4 doesn't have a minimal packages option in text-mode either the installation sizes do match.
