Thanks for those replies, those are excellent starting points!

One of the tips I read in the FAQ at Apache's site is that using the 
tool curl the status can be checked.
Hence performing the following:
curl https://localhost/

...indicated that something was amiss with the CA certificate.

Yesterday evening it already dawned on me that I think it's necessary to 
purchase a certificate (from companies such as Verisign). If so, then I 
guess that's the missing link.
