I'd invest the time in getting Kickstart working. If you've taken a
look at it and decided against it, then you just need a Kick(start) in
the right direction!
What I've done where I work is set up a Kickstart server and scripts
with the ability to create the PXE config files and modify any
Kickstart OS templates - specific to the server being installed.
These templates are pretty generic - describing the OS, then in the
%post section I download and run a script which takes some parameters
(set when I run a script to configure the Kickstart file for that
host). This then allows me to customise the box as necessary.
So I have the same base OS, and then put extra packages on according
to the parameters in the script. It's worked very successfully.
The scripts are very generic - I'll see if they are generic and tidy
enough to make available if interested.
