Re: X server problem after up2date

Forgive the obvious question, but you have tried re-installing the NVidia driver? In my hands, the run script would un-install any previous versions it finds and go about it's business of putting the new version in it's place. I'm also assuming you've done this from a non X-server boot?, i.e. text mode only by modifying initd? If you've rebooted to a faulty xconfig, you may have to go in and manually edit that as well with VI or your favorite text editor. It should work, unless you have some other non-standard kernel utils compiled in?

I've really mucked things up this time...

I just ran up2date and it loaded a new version of the kernel
(2.4.0.21-32....) and the accompanying kernel source and utilities.

I then noticed that openGL applications were not using the hardware
acceleration. So, I reran the NVIDIA driver installer (version 7174).

Now when I boot I get the message "There already appears to be an X server
running on display :0. Should I attempt to try another display number?"

Uninstalling the NVIDIA drivers doesn't make it any happier. Can anyone tell
me how to recover from here?

Thanks,
Thom
