probably a stupid question, but did you also stop the openipmi driver
and (possibly) unload the ipmi kernel modules (if stopping the service
doesnt do that automatically, that is.)

Exceedingly useful error message there. I'll have to go speak with the
devs for that, as that error is exactly zero help in diagnosing
anything.
