RHCE Certification:
RHCE: What does it mean?

RHCE of the Year

Red Hat Certified Engineers -- RHCEs for short -- are a special group. If you've read the RHCE overview, you know how challenging the courses are. And the reviews don't lie. But if you're still wondering how RHCE accreditation could help your career, read on.

Last year, RHCEs from three regions--North America, Europe, and Asia were selected as RHCE of the Year. This year again, you will have a chance to win a trip to the Red Hat Summit!

Red Hat is now accepting applications for RHCE of the Year. Application deadline is May 2, 2008.

Student Testimonials

With Red Hat training, you'll be able to administer more machines in less time, increasing your productivity and saving your company money. You'll be able to deploy and manage any number of Linux boxes with Red Hat Network - from running bare-metal PXE boot, using kick-start images for predefined configuration, to cloning any system in your network and updating whole groups of boxes at once. And you don't have to take our word for it. During the Red Hat Certified Engineer of the Year competition, we asked the RHCEs from all over the world to tell us what the certification means to them. Read their responses from North America, Asia, and Europe.

Brian Epstein
Comcast, USA
RHCE of the Year North America

"I currently volunteer as Director of Technology for a 501(c)3 non-profit organization called the New Jersey Boys' State Foundation. This 61-year old program by the American Legion is designed to teach leadership and state politics to high-school juniors for one week out of the year. I attended Boys' State in 1994 and have been a counselor ever since. In 2002, I brought computers to the program."

"We now have 40 computers that we deliver, deploy, and use over the course of one week. Physically, this is a lot of work, but Red Hat has made the configuration and deployment of software quick, easy and free. This program is often the first glimpse of Red Hat that these high-school students see, and I always get questions about how they can learn more. RHCE is the penultimate Linux certification out there. I conduct a lot of job interviews for my company, and I get to see a lot of other certifications, but when I come across an RHCE, I know what they've been through, and I know that that is the real certification to have."

Ricky Wee
Chevalier, Singapore
RHCE of the Year Asia-Pacific

"RHCE provided me with an opportunity to use Linux to the fullest in my company. [...] On top of which, there's the wide choice of fantastic open source software. It saves us a great bundle [of money] - from email services with anti-virus and anti-spam features, over file services, database servers, web services, content management systems, network monitoring services, to software metering, and more...RHCE provided me with the foundation to achieve so much with so little cost. It's a privilege to be an RHCE, and I am proud to have achieved this certification."

Demosthenes Mateo Jr.
Australia

"Two months after getting a perfect score in the RHCT [exam], I took a shot at the RHCE. I got a perfect score again. Ever since I learned Linux, it has been my dream to administer the most critical and longest-running servers in the world, so I volunteered to specialize in High Availability Clusters. I learned about the Cluster Suite and GFS just by reading the online docs. Because we didn't have the budget for cluster hardware, I began creating my own clusters in VMware using iSCSI for shared storage. My supervisor was very proud of what I did so he sent me to the RH436 class. I got [a] perfect [score] again."

Marco Emanuel Palazzotti
Innovia, Italy
RHCE of the Year Europe

Marco has been developing Linux-based storage solutions since 2000. Marco's current employer has started the IOSA (Innovia Open System & Source Attitude) project to develop integration services and solutions on open software. "We are involved in server and storage (NAS/SAN) consolidation projects using virtualization solutions. We are [educating] our customers that satellite and GFS will improve their IT infrastructure. Being an RHCE is something special for me, because I am not only a Linux engineer, Linux is also my passion."

Jennifer Tippens
Oak Ridge National Lab
USA

"I have been an RHCE for two years, and it's a pride, and a validation of what I already knew."

Jamie Bernstein
Systems Administrator
Federal Reserve Bank
USA

"I'd been promoting Linux at work for a long time before becoming an RHCE in 2000, and now [the certification] gives me more credibility, when I say we should be using [Linux] more."

Tracy Bost
Chief Technology Officer
Valocity, USA

"Being a RHCE is not just about Linux. It's about knowledge for change and about having the vision and understanding to bring innovative solutions to an organization, and even more importantly, to an industry. Becoming an RHCE has paved the road for visualizing how Red Hat and open source solutions could bring our national company as a viable force in the Mortgage Services Industry. Without a doubt, understanding the heartbeat of Linux and open systems has enabled me to envision an industry-changing process. I have recently written a paper to the standardizing body of the Mortgage Industry (MISMO) proposing a standard business rules format, which would revolutionize the industry. The proposal has been embraced enthusiastically across the industry and will undoubtedly save millions a year in cost savings once fully implemented! At the core of that thought process is open source."
