Red Hat Launches Linux Portal

Market-leading Provider of Linux Software and Expertise Partners with Top Developer Resources to Deliver a Single Web Site for Linux News, Applications and Support.

LINUXWORLD EXPO

Red Hat, Inc. (LinuxWorld Booth # 1926), the market-leading provider of Linux software and expertise, today announced a new Linux portal that provides millions of Linux users with a single Web site to access the latest news, support information and software for the world's fastest-growing operating system.

The portal, which goes live this week at www.redhat.com, was developed in conjunction with some of the Internet's most popular, award-winning resources for developers and Linux users. These include: slashdot.org, which was named a "Hot New Site" by USA Today and to the "Top 100 Web Sites" for developers by PC Magazine and www.freshmeat.net, another award-winning software repository for Linux users. From the single Linux Portal at Red Hat, users can browse news from these and other sites, access user groups and quickly and easily search through thousands of other Linux resources on the Internet from a single location.

"Red Hat continues to aggressively expand the resources for the Linux community with the recent announcement of 24 x 7 support, education services, substantial partnerships with the largest server vendors and now a one-stop portal for Linux community news, support and applications," said Bob Young, president and CEO of Red Hat Software. "Red Hat's name recognition and support gives these popular sites even more resources to deliver the latest news and services to the booming Linux user community."

More than 10 million users currently run the Linux operating system. According to IDC Research, Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, capturing more than 17 percent of all server operating system shipments. A new survey in LinuxWorld showed that 74 percent of those polled cite Red Hat as the most recognized Linux vendor.

The Red Hat Linux Portal

The Red Hat Linux Portal provides a one-stop Internet resource that makes it tremendously easy for Linux users to use the thousands of Linux resources on the Internet. In addition to news summaries from three of the Internet's most-popular Linux news sites, the new portal also offers:

  • Application Index, a compilation of hundreds of the most popular Linux applications, including Apache, Corel's WordPerfect and Oracle 8, among others.
  • Linux Index, which provides hotlinks to the most popular resources on the Internet, including Linux distributors, application vendors, third-party support pages and educational institutions.
  • User Groups, giving users contact information for Linux user groups worldwide.
  • Advanced Search Engine, which lets users leverage the single Red Hat portal to keyword search all the Linux sites on the Internet and the Red Hat portal offerings quickly and easily.
