Leading Universities Around the World Choose Red Hat Academic Solutions for Servers and Clients

Cost savings and performance were sited as top reasons to deploy Red Hat Enterprise Linux

RALEIGH, N.C. -

In December 2003, Red Hat announced new Linux solutions for servers and clients in the education and academic community to help institutions and students respond to rising educational costs while supporting the accelerating interest in learning and contributing to the development of open source software.

Imperial College London needed a cost-effective, scalable solution for infrastructure, research and teaching use. Imperial College purchased Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) WS subscriptions for students and faculty members in addition to deploying multiple servers on Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS for College administration and infrastructure.

"Use of open source and Linux within the College research community is wide spread and gaining momentum. We needed to find a mechanism to deliver a well supported Linux distribution with a long life cycle for use in infrastructure, research and teaching. Red Hat's affordable pricing structure will allow Imperial's ICT division to offer a supported Linux package to our academic community," said John Shemilt, Head of Technology Operations at Imperial College London. "Red Hat Network (RHN) Proxy Server and management entitlements will enable us to easily standardize support for all who require it. Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides a stable and secure platform which is required to run scientific applications in our teaching and research labs."

Limited by an under-performing UNIX system and faced with a reduced budget, Vanderbilt University required an economical way to efficiently run Oracle applications for the school's infrastructure. Vanderbilt implemented Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS and is already recognizing lower cost of ownership and increased productivity.

"Ultimately it's about performance and total-cost-of-ownership (TCO). The cost advantages of RHEL Academic Solutions with Red Hat Network were just too attractive to turn down," said Kevin McDonald, Program Manager for System Administration. "Higher performance is a definite benefit of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and we immediately saw lower TCO in hardware and software, as well as in system administrationbecause our Unix skills easily transferred. Red Hat's Academic Solutions are an incredible value and when we considered the added benefits of Red Hat's support with patching and security through Red Hat Network, we felt we had everything to gain and very little to lose."
