Security

My environment won’t let me have a network connection from my Red Hat Satellite Server back to Red Hat. What other options do I have?

Red Hat Satellite is capable of being run in a disconnected or secure mode where content updates are loaded using physical media. Channel content ISOs can be downloaded from Red Hat and are required to keep certified content up-to-date. Many organizations that have tight security requirements use the disconnected Red Hat Satellite configuration.

How is security implemented between Red Hat Satellite Server and its managed nodes?

From a features perspective, Red Hat Satellite lets administrators implement a full audit trail of all activities taken through Red Hat Satellite and assign policies and permissions for simple role-based administration.

From the network side, Red Hat Satellite ensures secure communications. The communication method between client and server is always client-initiated. Communications between Red Hat Satellite and clients use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and GNU Privacy Guard (GPG) encryption.

Interoperability and customization

Does Red Hat Satellite work with other management products from vendors like HP or IBM?

You can use the application programming interface (API) in Red Hat Satellite to script commands inside the product and to exchange information with other management products. Customers have used the API in Red Hat Satellite to integrate it with other management tools from vendors like HP and IBM.

Does Red Hat Satellite have an API access layer?

The Red Hat Satellite API is based on XML-RPC, which lets distinct pieces of software on disparate systems make remote procedure calls using XML over HTTP.

Installation and architecture

What type of hardware do you need to run Red Hat Satellite Server?

A basic guideline:

  • Intel multicore processor, 2.4GHz dual processor, 512K cache, or equivalent
  • Minimum of 4GB of memory (8GB recommended)
  • Minimum of 50GB of storage/disk space for the base Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation, database, and Red Hat Network channel repository

See the Red Hat Satellite installation guide for the most current specifications.

Are there any high-availability options for Red Hat Satellite?

  • For Red Hat Satellite servers using a standalone database, you can create a redundant Red Hat Satellite that can be operated as active or on standby.
  • For Red Hat Satellite servers with an embedded database, there's a cloning option to create an offline spare, but there's no true high-availability option.

Red Hat Satellite clients can also be configured for high availability and will contact a back-up Red Hat Satellite Server if necessary.

What kind of database is required to run Red Hat Satellite Server in my environment?

With the launch of Red Hat Satellite 5.6, a PostgreSQL database is now embedded with the product. Previous versions of Red Hat Satellite shipped with an embedded Oracle database. You also now have the freedom to choose between Oracle or PostgreSQL databases if you need an external DBA-managed database for scaling, compliance, or both purposes.

Are there installation and consulting services available for Red Hat Satellite Server?

Yes. Red Hat Global Professional Services has a 1-week package specifically for Red Hat Satellite customers. Contact Red Hat Sales for more information.
