Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization

Red Hat has announced general worldwide availability of a new set of virtualization products, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers, which includes a standalone hypervisor as well as server virtualization management tools.

Important to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization is the Red Hat Enterprise Linux ABI compatibility statement that Red Hat Enterprise Linux will work unmodified in Red Hat hypervisors so applications written and certified to run on physical servers will continue to run and be certified on Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.

Through our partnership with Red Hat, we've been able to certify our broad array of mission-critical information security and management solutions once, enabling our customers to deploy them consistently across a range of physical and virtual platforms. The ability for joint customers to be assured of compatibility with Red Hat's virtualization solutions with no added steps required of partners speaks to the flexibility and value of both Red Hat's partnerships and technologies.

- John Magee, Vice President of Product Marketing, Symantec.
Our customers turn to BMC's BSM platform to reduce the complexity and cost of managing their entire IT infrastructure. Red Hat's certify once, deploy anywhere partner pledge allows us to deliver on our own promise to provide solutions that can be easily deployed on both physical or virtual hardware and allow our customers to achieve rapid return on investment in technologies such as virtualization.

- Kia Behnia, chief architect at BMC

To help our partners and customers ease the deployment challenges of heterogeneous virtualization solutions, we are expanding our partnership with Red Hat to leverage their Enterprise Linux technology. We are also helping customers reduce costs and improve the value of virtualization technology by using Red Hat Enterprise Linux to develop virtual appliances for HP's Business Technology Optimization software portfolio.

- Ramin Sayar, Senior Director of Products, Software and Solutions, HP
We are very pleased that Red Hat's hypervisor will leverage Red Hat's ABI commitment and thus run our products unmodified based upon our current support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. This saves us time and money on certification testing and allows us to deliver a broader solution to our customers.

- Jose Morales, VP of Business Development, Jaspersoft
Sybase and Red Hat have a strong history of successful collaboration and we are pleased to be extending the relationship by working with Red Hat on their ABI Lifecycle. Sybase(R) Adaptive Server(R) Enterprise (ASE), our mission-critical enterprise data management system, combined with Red Hat's ABI virtualization, will reduce barriers for our mutual customers to adopt the new Red Hat virtualized platform. Users will enjoy significant advantages in resource utilization and availability of applications as a result of this joint effort.

- Brian Vink, Sybase VP of Database Products
Red Hat's commitment to ABI compatibility enables SAS to confidently support customers on each major release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux without requiring additional statements and potential delays. As a result, customers have the flexibility to standardize on any future minor release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and the freedom to upgrade at their own speed, while maintaining confidence that their SAS applications are fully supported.

- Craig Rubendall, Director of Research & Development, SAS

Red Hat's existing ABI Commitment:

  • Exists with or without Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.
  • Supports applications between minor releases on physical servers or virtual machines.
  • Can be extended to this level of commitment for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization because Red Hat can direct the the behavior of the operating system and the hypervisor.
  • States that if a problem should occur, Red Hat will fix the issue with the same service level response that it uses to fix any other issue that might occur in a physical environment.

Because of this, Red Hat's ISV community in the Red Hat Partner Program will have access to over 5,000 applications that will be compatible and certified from day one with Red Hat's new virtualization products. With this:

  • ISVs can avoid the expense of re-certification.
  • Customers immediately benefit from a rich array of applications to choose from, which is expected to accelerate the adoption of virtualization.
  • The ability to run and support unmodified applications in a virtual machine will also play an important role in future Red Hat efforts to collaborate with ISVs or customers running their applications in Red Hat Certified Provider Clouds.
