Background:

About Interoute Interoute owns and operates one of the largest voice and data networks in Europe. The fiber optic network encompasses over 60,000 kilometers, connecting 30 countries in 102 cities. Interoute serves enterprises and telecom operators worldwide from Stockholm to Sicily, Moscow to Madrid, London to Istanbul, with voice, video, computing and high-capacity international data bandwidth and network infrastructure. Nine undersea landing stations mark out the connecting points for Europe. Toward the west, the network leads to the most important North American telecommunications nodes. On the eastern end, the network connects the Near East to Europe through Dubai. In the south, Interoute connects the African continent directly with Europe–from Cape Town to Tunis. Among Interoute’s services is a unified IT infrastructure, which integrates connectivity, communications and computing services on a single secure network platform. This allows customers to enjoy cost savings together with more security, performance and efficiency. Interoute’s customers include all of the largest telecommunications providers, as well as many large-scale enterprises. Over a billion Euros in e-commerce transactions flow through Interoute’s datacenters every day. Interoute is currently recognized as Europe’s leading provider of bandwidth and transit services, and is also increasingly regarded for its cloud computing services as a result of its European network.

Business Challenge:

Harnessing the power of Red Hat solutions

Interoute Germany owns and operates the most modern and dense European fiber optic network, with an overall length of 60,000 km. It offers its customers a comprehensive portfolio of voice and data solutionSystem management made easy through Red Hat Network Satellite.

In addition to consolidating its Linux-based infrastructure on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Interoute also implemented Red Hat Network Satellite, a multiclient systems management solution, to administer the company’s Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. The solution allows for the automated installation of operating systems across the network, improving the quality of software distribution by eliminating human error while saving time and significantly reducing long-term costs. The platform also enables software updates, configuration management, and provision and monitoring of physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.

“The multi-client capability of a management solution like Red Hat Network Satellite is essential for a hosting provider with an extensive customer base. The easy-to-use web-based user interface is also a great advantage,” said Dietrich.

Interoute also uses Red Hat Consulting for customized deployments and configurations of open source solutions. Red Hat Consulting helps companies like Interoute maximize product performance and efficiency, ensuring that their systems are working in line with IT initiatives and meeting the organization’s goals.s, including IP VPN, hosting, VoIP, and managed video conferencing. Its hosting services span from virtual to dedicated hosting.

To provide these services and manage business-critical operating environments, the company operates 2 datacenters in Berlin and Munich which house about 1,500 physical and virtual machines. Most of these machines are HP servers from the ProLiant series and historically have been running a combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu and Debian.

For a provider of hosting services, customer contracts are mostly long-term, therefore a key challenge is to ensure infrastructure is both stable and capable of keeping pace with future developments. Continually upgrading to new versions of the operating system is counterproductive to progress and involves considerable administrative effort for providers and customers. While expanding its service portfolio, the company also realized the need to strengthen its IT infrastructure and deploy future-proof, scalable solutions to keep pace with business growth.

As a result, Interoute decided to move all of its Linux-based hosted services to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The choice to do so was made easier because of Red Hat Enterprise Linux’s extremely long product life cycle, which includes updates, error correction and the provision of patches, as well as the continual integration of new functions and optimized drivers. The new operating environment that was standardized on Red Hat Enterprise Linux also provided great efficiency relative to support and administration.

“As a provider of hosting services, long-term manufacturer support is essential,” said Markus Dietrich, business solution consultant at Interoute Germany. “Red Hat allows us to fulfill our commitment to provide customers with the highest reliability and availability standards, maximum uptime, and 24x7 support. In a highly competitive market, Red Hat solutions have given us a real edge.”

Currently, around 80 percent of Interoute’s hosting solutions are based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, with only 20 percent running on proprietary operating systems.
