Business Challenge:

Seeking an advanced operating system for an advanced SaaS solution

PayPros had always depended on Red Hat Enterprise Linux for its payment system. “Red Hat was our de facto corporate standard,” said Joe Monteil, chief information officer (CIO) for PayPros. “We’ve used Red Hat over the years and have been very happy with it, and made a conscious decision to continue with it as the core environment for our PayPros Innovo platform. PayPros’ next-generation payment architecture is designed to include all the innovations in the payment space.”

Solution:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6: The right operating system for a complex workload

PayPros’ Innovo platform processes hundreds of millions of transactions every year. Having the right operating system environment was essential for building a next-generation payment service platform to power those transactions.

“From an ease of use, support, and maintenance standpoint, Red Hat Enterprise Linux was the obvious choice,” said Monteil. “It’s also reliable and secure, and its licensing model makes things very easy.” The TCO was also lower than other operating system choices, he said.

PayPros also decided to deploy Red Hat Satellite to manage its Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. “Red Hat Satellite made a huge difference to us in terms of helping us keep our servers current,” said Monteil. “The fact that we had to do minimal manual intervention really lowered our TCO.”

Benefits:

The best operating system for a demanding, always-on world

Security was one of the chief reasons PayPros chose Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and the decision has paid off. “We have to undergo PCI [payment card industry] audits, as well as any number of audits with the different credit card brands,” said Monteil. “Red Hat Enterprise Linux lends itself to a more secure environment—it offers capabilities that put you in a better place than if you were running other operating systems.” According to Monteil, to achieve a comparable level of security using other operating systems, you have to constantly manually update and otherwise frequently “touch” them. “You can get to where you need to be using other operating systems, but it takes a lot more time, and is a lot more costly,” he said.

PayPros also achieves a lower TCO simply because of Red Hat Enterprise Linux’s ease of use, said Monteil. And the fact that it is so stable and reliable goes to the heart of PayPros’ business success.

“In today’s world of always being on, and having everything completely accessible all the time, the consumer of these experiences loses sight of what’s involved in delivering an always-on solution,” said Monteil. Whether that’s a computer transaction system, cell phone call, or voice call, consumers expect instant access to information and services. “And because of these expectations, the attention span of the user is considerably shortened,” said Monteil. “And any business that wants to grow has to do this. Given that, you need to be comfortable that your operating system is always available and secure to exist in this world in which there is no ‘off’ switch. Red Hat Enterprise Linux gives us that.”

Another important benefit arising from the security that Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers: “Because you don’t have to do as much as other operating systems would require, you can afford to devote resources to other activities and projects,” said Monteil. In fact, he said this has allowed him to keep his IT headcount down despite the firm’s rapid growth. “The ease and
productivity of Red Hat Enterprise Linux saved us a good deal of money,” he said.

Currently, PayPros supports more than 55,000 businesses, and in 2012 processed more than $10 billion in transactions with its back end system. “Through our solution, Red Hat Enterprise Linux ends up touching a lot of people,” said Monteil.

Ultimately, PayPros’ business is about providing customers with superlative service. “Red Hat not only gives me the opportunity to deliver a higher level of service to my partners, it impacts my partners’ customers. Our solution is sold to businesses through relationships with software developers. The security, performance, and throughput we get from Red Hat Enterprise Linux results in a shared experience all the way down our value chain.”
