More
Background:

Profit Software offers a suite of web-based software products that allow insurers, banks, and financing companies to create and provide life and pension insurance services, as well as long-term savings agreements. Founded in 1992, Profit Software has served more than 40 clients in nine countries. Today, it leads the market for life and pension insurance solutions in Finland and the Baltic states, and has a growing network of customers in Norway, Sweden, and Central and Eastern Europe. Headquartered in Espoo, Finland, it also has branch offices in Pori, Finland and Tallinn, Estonia.

Business Challenge:

Open source identified as leader against competing products

Profit Software mainly develops Java-based applications. The company wanted to unify its development environments to enable all programmers to work in the same environment. One of its biggest challenges was the separate development environments, which caused inefficiencies in time, resources, environment maintenance, and complicated remote access to the system. Profit Software wanted to unify the development environments to improve time efficiencies for setup and main- tenance of different environments for every developer and project. To achieve this, the company needed a shared and virtualized development environment that was easy to access and provision, resulting in improved cost of service and efficiency.

Profit Software had been running VMware on its servers, but needed a robust virtualization platform that could also support Linux desktop and servers. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization was an ideal solution because it delivers the same capabilities as the VMware solution in addition to other features, such as the compatibility to work with Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers and desktops. It was important for the new deployment to be compatible with Linux desktops to ensure Profit Software did not have to maintain two parallel systems.

Solution:
A speedy system implementation

Netorek, a Finnish IT consultancy and a Red Hat Advanced Business Partner, was responsible for the deployment and recommended Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization. It was easy to deploy Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization on Profit Software’s up-to-date IBM servers.
Benefits:

Improved operational efficiency and scalability

The combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Red Hat Virtualization provides an end-to-end solution that unifies the software development environment for the entire company.

As a result of this deployment, programmers now have a standardized environment and no longer have to wait for software development environments to be installed on physical systems. Developers work in a common desktop environment, and when a new virtual computer is built for a certain project, it can be instantly shared with the entire development team.

“Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization has improved our operational efficiency and is positively impacting revenue for the company,” said Tomi Pakarinen, lead architect, Profit Software. “The time used for building a development environment has dramatically reduced from one day to one hour, making our programmers much more productive and efficient. Updating the development tools is also far less time consuming.”

Red Hat Enterprise Linux with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization has also enabled a completely scalable, highly available solution that can be dialed up or down to meet business needs—without worrying about server downtime.

Remote access is also much easier now because the deployment has eliminated the need for VPN connections or firewalls. Programmers simply access their virtual desktops, applications, and files through a secure connection from a web browser. This ensures the virtual desktop continues to run, regardless of the laptop, which means that if the laptop breaks or fails in any way, users are able to simply access their environments from another machine without losing any data.

Future-proof solution

Profit Software plans to migrate all servers and desktop development environments that are virtualized on VMware to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization. The new setup now gives the company the chance to concentrate on its core business of software development.

“Because of the efficiencies and capability to run both servers and desktops, as well as Windows and Linux environments on the same platform, our Red Hat solution gives us back the time to imagine and innovate,” said Pakarinen.
