As a Red Hat Premier Partner, Quru made the strategic decision to consolidate its entire IT infrastructure on Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization to better manage its technology landscape and achieve flexibility and scalability.

Customer: Quru

“All of our servers needed to be virtualized to provide for greater flexibility and to improve hardware efficiency. And as a Red Hat Premier Partner, we had seen the benefits of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and decided to use the software we recommend to our customers.” Robin Porter, Quru

Geography: EMEA
Country: United Kingdom

Business Challenge:

Controlling costs was of significant importance for Quru. As the organisation grew, a highly heterogeneous IT infrastructure rapidly evolved.

Software:

Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Business Challenge:

Consolidating a physical infrastructure onto a Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Environment

Established in 2007, Quru is a UK-based software development and consulting firm and a Red Hat Premier Partner. A highly experienced group of Linux® experts, Quru built its own IT infrastructure using open source solutions.

Controlling costs was of significant importance for Quru. As the organisation grew, a highly heterogeneous IT infrastructure rapidly evolved. Each business application — from communications platforms for email and telephones to database solutions, web servers, version control, bug reporting, to ticket management — was running on its own dedicated server. Prior to implementing a virtualization solution, Quru’s entire IT landscape included 10 servers configured quite differently. For a relatively small business, this configuration was proving burdensome.

“All of our internal systems needed to be virtualized to provide greater flexibility and to improve hardware efficiency,” said Robin Porter, business development manager, Quru. “And as a Red Hat Premier Partner, we had seen the benefits of Red Hat® Enterprise Virtualization and decided to use the software we recommend to our customers.”

The project included consolidating the physical infrastructure onto a Red Hat Enterprise Linux® and Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization environment, in addition to the design and deployment of an off-site, low-cost disaster recovery facility.

Solution:

Reducing servers, offering high availability, increasing scalability

The Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization deployment resulted in a significant reduction in total servers—to just two IBM xSeries x3650 M4 servers, each with two sockets and one CPU. There are now 12 virtual machines per host, each with 3GB of RAM. The total amount of memory deployed on each server is 96GB RAM.

With this consolidation, Quru can now run an expanded range of services with more developers writing applications on less hardware, with much simpler management and faster provisioning. Previously, it took a developer up to three days to build a server and deploy an application for testing. Now, with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, it takes only a few minutes.

In addition, the IT infrastructure now has high availability and scalability. The inherent interoperability of a Red Hat solution means developers can work seamlessly when using a wide variety of operating systems, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, SLES, Ubuntu, and Windows.

Benefits:

Improving infrastructure management, enhancing application availability, and increasing security

As part of the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization deployment, Quru is using Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization management features, including the GUI-based tool and live migration, to move a running virtual machine between physical hosts with no interruption to service. High availability features ensure that the virtual machines are restarted on a host based on its current resource utilization and in compliance with any workload balancing and power-saving policies. This enables Quru to avoid business process interruptions like email or telephony getting forced offline by a server failure.

In addition, enhanced application availability enables Quru to rapidly deploy test environments in minutes rather than hours, enabling the company to serve its customers more efficiently and effectively.

“An indirect benefit and one that is arguably more valuable than the logistical IT challenges that have been solved, is the fact that we are now walking the walk, as well as talking the talk when it comes to Red Hat,” said Porter. “Our team now has a much deeper appreciation of Red Hat solutions. And the engineering knowledge that comes from using a solution on an everyday basis sets us apart from some of our competitors. In addition, we have more engineering capability as a result of this deployment.”

As part of the consolidation, Quru also deployed a backup and recovery solution for Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, which enables the organisation to copy back-up files to an off-site location and be better prepared for a catastrophic event.

“We’re a Red Hat partner,” said Porter, “which is why we chose to use Red Hat technology. VMware would be the obvious alternative, but it is up to four times the cost. Open source and Linux are at the heart of everything we do.”

By standardising on Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Quru has developed an IT infrastructure that is scalable, easy to manage, and underpinned by a secure back-up and disaster recovery plan -- a combination that will support rapid growth.
