Open Source in Government

  • Answers the call for transparency
  • Stable, trustworthy, secure
  • Meets mission critical IT demands

A Note from Paul Smith

Paul Smith

US Federal and State and Local government IT professionals are faced with daunting challenges and problems today: In a few words, provide better, more secure services while working with heavier workloads, finite floor space and limited power. Oh, yeah, and do it for much less than you are doing it for today.

Of the many buzz phrase solution sets to solve these problems in government -- Cloud, Virtualization and Open Source Software come up as discussion points. These topics, however, are interrelated and in best practice are interdependent of each other.

Red Hat, the world's most successful Open Source Software Company is announcing a broad virtualizaiton strategy that will deliver performance, stability, scalability and security. Heretofore, customers were asked to sacrifice one for the other. By leveraging the industry’s most stable and secure computing platform, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® powered by kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) virtualization, the Linux kernel is transformed into a fully featured, high-performance, and secure hypervisor. By sharing Red Hat's broad hardware and ISV ecosystem this will greatly expand the market adoption as well.

Respectfully,
Paul Smith, GM & VP, Public Sector Sales Operations

Hill Air Force Base - 2007 Red Hat Innovator of the Year

Hill AFB's existing system went down eight times in three months. With about 18,000 users on base, many of whom are doing highly sensitive and deadline-driven work, it can cost up to $1 million per hour when Hill's systems are down.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux stood out as the only Linux that was able to meet security concerns. In addition to having enhanced security, Red Hat's solutions were much more economical than others. To sustain the existing environment and increase capability, it would have cost Hill a minimum of $5 million per year to use Solaris. Red Hat Enterprise Linux cost $100,000, just two percent of the cost of the old operating system.

"We selected Red Hat and JBoss Enterprise Middleware in order to meet our client's budgetary constraints, support requirements and operational needs. The combination of efficiency provided by Xen, scalability provided by Red Hat Cluster Suite, GFS, and the clustering feature of JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, along with the agility provided by the JBoss family of products has led our client to consider these products as their top-tier choice."

NSA takes its Flask architecture to the open-source community to offer an inexpensive route to trusted systems

Architecture created by the National Security Agency and expanded with help from the open-source community will save the Defense Department and intelligence agencies millions in hardware costs. Analysts used to need multiple computers because they worked on separate machines for each classification level of data they accessed. Soon, users will be able to access data from a single console that could cost $500 or less, thanks to the NSA security architecture dubbed Flask.

With Flask, "we can guarantee that high-integrity data can't be corrupted by untrustworthy entities or that sensitive data doesn't leak to untrustworthy entities," said Stephen Smalley, one of the chief developers of Flask at NSA. The best part is that the technology requires no specialized hardware or operating system.
