Directive 8570

With the increasing threat of IT security breaches, the Department of Defense has implemented a formalized training and certification policy for all personnel with access to DoD information systems, known as Directive 8570.1. Directive 8570.1 impacts more than 100,000 people including full and part-time military employees, contractors, and foreign-national personnel. 8570.1 compliance is also required for many current DoD vendors and may soon become mandatory for all vendors bidding on any IT-related DoD business.

The ultimate vision of the Directive is a sustained, professional IA workforce with the knowledge and skills to effectively prevent and respond to attacks against DoD information, information systems, and information infrastructures. This effort will enable DoD to put the right people with the right skills in the right place.

8570.01-M, the Directive's underlying manual, refers to the 100,000+ DoD personnel-base as the Information Assurance (IA) Workforce and breaks these individuals into two categories: Information Assurance Management (IAM) and Information Assurance Technical (IAT). Each of the two has three levels (I, II, and III) depending on experience, knowledge, and job scope.

IAM workforce members are defined, generally, as those IAs who deploy and implement security standards, information procedures while determining long term needs and requirements. Each of the three levels is required to attain CISSP or certain other management intensive security certifications. IAMs may choose from three authorized certifications depending on their level. Consult 8570.01-M for further information.

IAM technical category is defined as IA personnel with privileged access to DoD information systems. IATs must attain two certifications. First they must attain a technically-oriented security certification, like Security+ for example, one of several that the three levels can choose from. IATs may choose from seven authorized certifications depending on their level.

Unlike IAMs however, IATs "must also obtain certifications required to implement the IA requirements for their specific operating system environment." Check 8570.01-M Chapter 3 for more information.

Red Hat certifications are indisputably regarded as the best in Linux, and perhaps, according to some, in all of IT. Taught entirely by experienced Red Hat experts, our certification programs measure competency on actual live systems and have been earned by thousands of federal employees throughout most every civilian and defense agency.

Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT)

Now in its fifth year, Red Hat Certified Technician is the fastest-growing credential in all of Linux. RHCT is the best first step in establishing Linux credentials and is an ideal initial certification for those transitioning from non-UNIX®/ Linux environments.

Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)

Red Hat Certified Engineer began in 1999 and has been earned by more than 30,000 Linux experts. Called the crown jewel of Linux certifications, independent surveys have ranked the RHCE program #1 in all of IT.
