The Town Council in Marsala created its first computer-based infrastructure 1981 and has been a pioneer in offering online services to its citizens. With increasing user numbers and the need for advancedresources, it looked for a solution to help control costs related to upgrading and maintenance without reducing the number of services available to its citizens.

The Marsala Town Council now has a highly advanced IT department,equipped with very high-tech servers where Red Hat Enterprise Linux plays the central role. All the services provided by the Town Council, both in the office and online, are based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Access to the online services is now easier and quicker for citizens, with no risk to the reliability and security of the Town Council's IT structure.

Federal Aviation Administration

As the government agency responsible for regulating and overseeing all aspects of civil aviation within the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) accomodates more than two million passengers on domestic airlines every day. With roughly 8,000 airplanes in the air at any given time, the successful execution of the FAA's mission largely depends on the highly complex Traffic Flow Management (TFM) infrastructure and its real-time Enhanced Traffic Management System (ETMS).

The Government of Maharashtra case study illustrates why Linux and other open source programs are gaining popularity with governments, the world over. The use of Linux, open source software and commodity hardware has helped GoM provide "Anytime, Anywhere, Anyhow," access to more than one million citizens while keeping a tight leash on administrative expenses. Various e-governance initiatives like Treasury Management, Citizen Facilitation Centers, Document Journey Management System and the Land Records Management System have been deployed on the Red Hat Linux platform. With the amazing success of these Open Source projects, as a policy, the Government has decided to develop all new applications on Linux.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux powers Argentinian transplant database

Instituto Nacional Central Unico Coordinador de Ablacione Implante(INCUCAI) is a decentralized body of the Department of Health in Argentina that regulates and oversees the procurement and transplant of organs and tissues throughout the country. In 2003, they started renovating the IT environment, replacing outdated systems, and creating a large modular system based on web applications. City of Vienna
