The 2011 Red Hat and JBoss Innovation Awards

Red Hat is pleased to announce the 2011 Red Hat and JBoss Innovation Award Winners. The Innovation Awards were created to recognize the technological achievements, outstanding use, innovation and extension of Red Hat and JBoss solutions by Red Hat customers, partners and the open source community.

From the finalists, one Red Hat Innovator of the Year and one JBoss Innovator of the Year was selected via online voting, and announced during the Red Hat Summit and JBoss World in Boston on May 6, 2011. Congratulations to Santos Limited for winning the Red Hat Innovator of the Year and Rancore Technologies for winning the JBoss Innovator of the Year. Category Winners

OPTIMIZED SYSTEMS: Recognition of striking performance, scalability and/or usability enhancements delivered with open source solutions.

Red Hat: Santos Limited
Santos Limited, www.santos.com, has been an Australian energy pioneer since 1954, and is one of that country's leading gas producers with approximately 5,000 staff across its offices and field operations in Australia and Asia. Through the innovative use of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and TurboVNC/VirtualGL Open Source technologies, Santos has massively reduced the complexity of its UNIX environment. With Red Hat, Santos has experienced a boost in performance, lowered costs significantly, and even saved power, all in one Open Source project.

JBoss: SNS Bank
SNS Bank, www.snsbank.nl, is one of the top four Dutch financial institutions focusing on banking, mortgages, savings and investment products for retail clients and small and medium enterprises. The company set out to empower its online customers by fully automating its business processes. A strong combination of JBoss GPS, JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, and JBoss jBPM provided the foundation for a successful migration from SNS Banks existing business processes that look place in traditional banking branch offices to a fully automated online e-banking experience. Due to this partnership and investment in this new strategy, SNS Bank achieved true business results including a 40 percent decrease in operating costs and 20 percent gain in new customers.

Red Hat: DreamWorks Animation
DreamWorks LCC was formed in 1994 with the goal of producing high-quality entertainment. Today, DreamWorks Animation SKG, http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/, prides itself on being on the leading edge of both creative artistry and technology. A powerful combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat MRG Grid, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform gives DreamWorks the tools to achieve its goals of reducing proprietary grid middleware costs while integrating open source messaging and application middleware with its next generation animation platform, while simultaneously positioning its infrastructure for adoption of cloud computing and beyond.

JBoss: Verizon Business
Verizon Business, www.verizonbusiness.com, operates the most connected Internet backbone network for enterprise customers around the world. In early 2010, Verizon was looking to harden a relatively new element of its mission-critical network management system and its IMPACT application and implement a high-availability architecture that would support its required scalability and performance, improve up-time and provide better support to its operation systems. By implementing JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform, which includes JBoss jBPM and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, along with design and implementation professional services from Amentra, a Red Hat company, Verizon gained improvements in its IT internal customer service department. These solutions have also allowed the company to provide better customer service to its business customers.

EXTENSIVE ECOSYSTEM: Recognition of the use of Red Hat or JBoss' expanding partner ecosystem to create innovative architectures based on open source solutions.

Red Hat: InfitiesSoft
InfinitiesSoft, www.infinitiessoft.com, was founded in 2003 and located in Kaohsiung. Taiwan. A supplier of JavaEE and BPM solutions and services, InfinitiesSoft also provides innovative solutions that address the cloud ecosystem. Because organizations have quickly realized the cost savings and efficiency of an investment in IT, InfinitiesSoft set out to help their clients reduce costs and improve performance. To provide organizations a solution that can fit these needs, InfinitiesSoft partnered with Red Hat to offer Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and JBoss Enterprise Middleware to build a total solution for their clients cloud ecosystem while maximizing their return on investment and reducing their total cost of ownership.

JBoss: New York & Company and Vizuri
New York & Company, www.nyandcompany.com, is a nationwide specialty retailer of women's fashion and accessories with over 400 associates at its headquarters in New York City, and approximately 7,500 part-time and full-time associates throughout their 551 retail locations. The retailers IT infrastructure needed a robust, scalable platform to support their key go-forward business initiatives. Therefore, New York & Company set out to have a fully integrated marketing and sales program that leveraged all fulfillment channels and increased revenue due to a unified view of inventory and ability to "save the sale". An intelligent Retail Brand HQ Integration Platform was the solution and JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform served as the integration hub for all of the systems to integrate and exchange information. New York & Company partnered with Vizuri, a Premier Red Hat Business Partner, to shape the business strategy and deliver technology innovation. They were instrumental team members who delivered a robust architecture for a real-time retailing environment that supports continuous information flow and real-time execution.
 

CARVED OUT COSTS: Recognition of customers who have leveraged open source solutions to significantly cut costs and extract added value from existing systems.

 Red Hat: Nissan Motor Company
Nissan Motor Company, http://www.nissan-global.com/, was founded in 1933 and is one of the largest car manufactures in the world with over 200,000 employees and $80 billion in revenue. With the launch of EV (Electric Vehicle) to the market, Nissan planned to introduce a new type of system services for supporting this new business. Setting out to make Linux its common platform and regain IT governance, Nissan selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Jboss Enterprise Application Platform to simplify its IT infrastructure. With more agility and less cost, the combination of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform has played a vital role in the Nissan Global-IS Strategy while providing more flexibility, simplicity, and efficiency.

JBoss: Emirates Group
The Emirates Group, www.theemiratesgroup.com, comprising Emirates Airline, dnata and subsidiary companies, is a major player in the global aviation, travel, tourism and leisure industries. Emirates Group Information Technology (EG-IT) is responsible for all facets of information technology and its role in supporting the Groups daily global operations and long-term growth plans. EG-IT develops the industry-leading solutions for financial management, cargo and logistics, passenger and airport solutions, process outsourcing and systems integration, made available to other carriers through its market-facing arm, Mercator. EG-IT used JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform as the basis for its development of a new Open Travel Platform (OTP). Built entirely on open source technologies, the platform facilitates the deployment of travel-related business systems, reusing core components and common interfaces, sharing infrastructure, and dramatically reducing both development costs and time to market for new applications and components.

OUTSTANDING OPEN SOURCE ARCHITECTURE: Recognition of the use of both Red Hat and JBoss with related partner offerings to create innovative architectures based on open source solutions.

Rancore Technologies
Rancore Technologies, www.rancoretech.com, is a leading technology R&D firm focused on 4G telecom networks and services. Rancore is a privately held company and a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a fortune 500 firm and India's most valuable company. Rancore set out to utilize open source technology to build a service delivery platform based on 4G standards. By leveraging open source solutions from Red Hat and JBoss, Rancore was able to achieve the solution capabilities by a small dedicated team of engineers. Poised to illustrate the success of open source on the largest scale in the Indian telecom industry, this project demonstrates how a low-cost, high-throughput, mission-critical system can be built using open source technology.
