The 2008 Red Hat Innovation Awards winners include:

Delivered Value

Nortel, a recognized leader in delivering next-generation communications capabilities for both service provider and enterprise networks that conducts business in over 150 countries, was selected for its early adoption and long-term use of Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite Server. Today, Nortel manages approximately 2,000 machines via its RHN Satellite Server and benefits from the ability to seamlessly update and patch its Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems using its internal networks.

Optimized Systems

Infoplex, one of Australia's fastest-growing and most dynamic IT Managed Service Providers was selected for its use of Red Hat Enterprise Linux as part of its new Incite and Postgres environment. Infoplex services include storage, disaster-recovery and Managed hosting. With Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Infoplex benefits from ease of migration, high performance and most importantly, impressive scalability that allows for the effective management and storage of over 300 million documents and more than 30,000 daily system users.

Superior Alternatives

Booz Allen Hamilton, a strategy and technology consulting firm with more than 18,000 employees serving government clients from more than 80 offices, was selected for its use of the full suite of Red Hat solutions to determine a new solution for a federal client's document ingestion and presentation system in order to scale with the system's increasing volume of data. Booz Allen's client replaced its closed-source based solutions with Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform with virtualization capabilities, Red Hat Global File System, Red Hat Cluster Suite, Red Hat Satellite Server, JBoss technology, including Metamatrix, and Red Hat Global Professional Services. The resulting benefits include high performance, scalability and high availability enabled by dynamically scalable clusters and storage and increased return on investment (ROI) enabled in part by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Advanced Platform's unlimited virtualization of Linux guests.

Creative Use

Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, and IBM were selected by the US Navy to build a first-of-its-kind open-architecure envionment to improve realtime programmer productivity, reduce realtime application development times and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) for its Zumwalt Total Ship Computing Environment (TSCE). Raytheon and IBM chose WebSphere Real time (real time java), Red Hat Enterprise MRG Realtime and system x servers, to deliver seamless integration of all on-board systems and provides the Navy with increased ability to use open source software. IBM and Raytheon choosing Red Hat as a base for this community effort to put real time capability into general purpose linux was made easier given Red Hat engineers were already working on real time extensions.

Extensive Ecosystem

Freedom OSS, a privately held professional services organization that provides technical architecture solutions to Fortune 1000 companies, was selected for its work with Dun & Bradstreet, a well-known provider of corporate credit information, on the consolidation of Dun & Bradstreet's massive application infrustructure that includes over 2,000 servers. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 with virtualization capabilties, JBoss Enterprise Application Platform and Red Hat Global File System together provided flexibility, manageability and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO). Dun & Bradstreet estimates that after migrating to Red Hat solutions, its return on investment (ROI) has exceeded $90 million.

Enhanced Security

Likewise Software, a privately held company with 50 employees that provides audit and authentication software solutions that run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Likewise was selected for its partnership with Red Hat which enabled the company in December 2007, to launch Likewise Open on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, an open source, enterprise-class solution to address the authentication needs of organizations with mixed networks. Likewise is a Red Hat Ready Level ISV Partner and recently joined the Red Hat Exchange (RHX) program.

The beauty of the open source model is that partners, customers and the community all play an important and guiding role in the development of Red Hat solutions and technologies, said Lee Congdon, CIO at Red Hat and 2008 Red Hat Innovation Awards judge. Each of the submissions in this year's awards program showed an impressive and innovative use of our technologies to solve problems and overcome challenges, and many involve valuable contributions back to Red Hat and the community. Congratulations to this year's category winners.
