Italian Olive Oil Manufacturer Enhances Performance with Red Hat Solutions
RaleighUnited States, December 18, 2007
Fratelli Carli utilizes Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 on IBM Mainframe System z to maintain consistent efficiency levels
Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Fratelli Carli, an Italian olive oil manufacturer, has standardized its IT infrastructure on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 to streamline the processing of orders and maintain system response times below one second through periods of peak demand. Since implementing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 on IBM Mainframe System z, the company has experienced increased levels of performance and simplification of communication within the mainframe.
Fratelli Carli was established in 1911 when the Fratelli family's printing business began selling the oil produced in its olive grove to the public. Today, it delivers over one million packages to over 600,000 customers per year. Fratelli Carli's business is unique in its direct sales process that eliminates the need for intermediaries. Orders are mainly received by telephone, but are also available through mail and via its new e-commerce website, and speed in processing orders is crucial.
To maintain reduced response times, and to implement a new, scalable system for validating customer addresses that could run on the mainframe's existing z/VSE system, Fratelli Carli turned to Red Hat solutions. With the assistance of Red Hat Advanced Partner Delphis Informatica, Fratelli Carli implemented Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 to run as a virtual guest on its IBM System z9 Business Class mainframe. Red Hat Enterprise Linux runs on the IBM z/VM virtualization hypervisor, which enables several instances of the operating system to run simultaneously on the same hardware.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is now used to control Fratelli Carli's entire mainframe, its DB2/Udb database containing customer data, and Egon, a Java-based application which ensures that customer addresses are entered correctly. XML messages are used to communicate between Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and the z/VSE operating system that runs concurrently on the System z9 Business Class mainframe.
Fratelli Carli's new solution automatically validates delivery addresses, reducing errors in data entry, and is increasing the performance of its order possessing system. With Red Hat solutions, the company's 40 customer-relations operators are able to maintain consistent efficiency levels, even during peak periods.
I am firmly convinced that Linux is the turning point for the evolution of mainframes, which, now as in the past, continue to be excellent systems in terms of reliability and performance, said Marco Gardini, Mainframe System Architect at Fratelli Carli.
I like Red Hat because it delivers a standard Linux product much closer to the logic of a mainframe than other products. I am totally satisfied with our choice. Red Hat support is very competent and always available, and it has supported me very well in the completion of this complex project.
We are excited that Fratelli Carli has selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and is experiencing its great benefits, said Gianni Anguilletti, country sales manager at Red Hat Italy.
Once again, our solutions have proven the value they can offer in terms of reliability, performance and flexibility. Fratelli Carli's work with Red Hat and Delphis Informatica also confirms the quality of the partner ecosystem that we have built for Red Hat solutions.
