Fedora Scholarship Program Encourages Open Source Innovation
RaleighUnited States, November 11, 2010
Program Recognizes Students for Their Contributions to Free and Open Source Software
The Fedora Project, a Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT) sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration, today announced the opening of the 2011 Fedora Scholarship program, recognizing college and university-bound students across the globe for their contributions to free software and the Fedora Project. The Fedora Scholarship is awarded to one high school senior each year to assist with the recipient's college or university education. This will mark the fourth year of this annual scholarship program as the Fedora Project continues to encourage young students to use and contribute to open source software.
"This is a scholarship that recognizes young talent in the pursuit of innovation. We hope to encourage and foster future technologists to develop and contribute technology openly," said Jared Smith, Fedora Project Leader at Red Hat. "The three previous Fedora Scholarship recipients are very active in open source communities while working toward their degrees. Open source is the right way for technology to be developed, the best ideas win. We are excited for the ideas the next generation of technologists will bring."
The Fedora Scholarship program furthers Red Hat and the Fedora Project's commitment to helping develop and foster emerging talent in the field of open source software. Applicants will be evaluated on criteria including the quality of contributions made to Fedora and other free software projects, references provided by Fedora community members, the amount of time the applicant has been contributing to Fedora and the overall quality of the application. Recipients will receive $2,000 USD per year for each of the four years that they attend college or university. In addition, the 2011 recipient will receive funding for travel and lodging at the Fedora User and Developer Conference (FUDCon) nearest to their location for each year of the scholarship.
The 2011 application window is now open and will close Feb. 25, 2011. For more information on the Fedora Scholarship or to apply, visit http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Scholarship.
