PGA TOUR Builds Mission-Critical Media Asset Management System on Red Hat Enterprise Linux
RaleighNC, Global, August 15, 2011
Nonprofit association turns to Red Hat solutions for expanded reliability, stability, scalability and performance
Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that the PGA TOUR teamed with its official technology partner CDW to migrate its proprietary servers to Red Hat Enterprise Linux for enhanced reliability, stability and performance for its strategic digital media assets management system.
The PGA TOUR is a nonprofit association for professional golfers. It stages tournaments, disseminates player statistics and scores and supplies media outlets with content for entertainment and promotional purposes. In the mid-2000s, 90 percent of the PGA TOUR’s business-critical systems ran on proprietary servers. Looking for a more reliable and higher-performance operating platform to scale its datacenter infrastructure and legacy applications, including IBM Lotus Notes, it began migrating its systems to Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
“Reliability was our key criterion in searching for a new operating platform. With the high performance and reliability delivered by Red Hat Enterprise Linux, we knew that our new solution would be able to better scale with our business growth than our previous platform,” said Jonas Gredenhag, manager of datacenter operations for the PGA TOUR. “We have migrated approximately half of our servers from our legacy software solution to Red Hat Enterprise Linux to date and are continuing to move the remainder of our applications to our new Red Hat solution.”
After initiating the migration of its servers to Red Hat Enterprise Linux, PGA Tour Entertainment, a division of PGA TOUR that produces programming both internally for PGA TOUR and externally for the Golf Channel, CBS, NBC and other network and cable outlets, chose to partner with Red Hat on an addition critical technology program. It needed to save content from valuable, disintegrating videotapes via a new media asset management system, Viz Ardome from VizRT, and selected to run this system on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The system allows PGA TOUR to find a specific video clip in seconds, rather than hours, and both edit and transfer the clip electronically at a fraction of the cost in comparison to working with analog media.
“Of all the Linux distributions on the market, we see Red Hat as the clear industry leader. We’ve also found Red Hat support to be extraordinary,” said Gredenhag. “When we create or update an application, or need to provision a new production server, our first question is, can we use Red Hat for this? If the answer is ‘yes,’ we call on CDW to provision a new Red Hat Enterprise Linux server.”
