Hi Gene,
Check out this list for running Linux on the R3000Z:

There is a new BIOS out now, F33 which apparently fixes the problem. 
So if you don't mind flashing to a newer BIOS, that should work for
you.  It seems like the F33 BIOS is the best update yet.  I haven't
ever upgraded because mine came with F11, which is not available
anymore and has not had some of the problems that others have.
