Here's some more weirdness:

http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Installation_Guide-en-US/s1-kickstart2-putkickstarthere.html#s2-kickstart2-boot-media

says:

To perform a CD-ROM-based kickstart installation, the kickstart file must
be named ks.cfg and must be located in the boot CD-ROM's top-level
  directory.

Ok, fine. Then it goes on to say in that same paragraph:

Refer to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Installation Guide for instructions
on creating boot media; however, before making the file.iso image file,
copy the ks.cfg kickstart file to the isolinux/ directory.

Huh? So does it go in the root of the CD or in the /isolinux directory? I
have put it in both places and I can't get it to see it either way.

I did however get my isolinux.cfg to work by copying it into the /isolinux
directory instead of just putting it in the /images/boot.iso

Why do I need a copy in the boot.iso as well as in the /isolinux
directory?

I've done tons of initrd hacking and general Linux stuff for a very long
time but this respinning CD stuff is not making any sense at all. :(
