Looks like I have the problem identified - SRM versiion. The DGC is 
running 5.6.
I am in hte process of upgrading to 5.8.
I have the exact same box, with SRM 5.8, and AC1 installs swwwweeeeeetly!
Sym scsi adapters work fine!
