It is built by Debian and distributed in binary form (*.deb package 
files) as part of the Debian Unstable distribution for Alpha.  I have 
used OpenOffice to view a few *.doc and *.docx files that I have 
received by email on my Alpha without any problems.

So, yes, that is an actual successful build of OO on Alpha.
