Sound in Debian Woody - how to get without kernel recompile

I have had two machines running Debian over the past 5 years--though
I've recently retired my Alpha system. Still, I was not fully accurate.
I didn't need to recompile the kernel--but I did need to proactively get
and configure alsa. Perhaps things are different now--you would
certainly know better than I. Sorry if I got that part wrong.
