X is the graphical environment that communicates with your video 
hardware to display graphics, the mouse pointer, etc. GNOME is a desktop 
environment that has everything you need to run and manage running 
grapical applications. It has a window manager, provides a desktop 
background, and other features to make using apps easier. The various 
components of GNOME communicate with X to display their content.

I am unable to help you there, as even though a lot of distros package 
GNOME, they all package it differently.

Automatic booting of GNOME requires X to do so. So in effect, X is being 
loaded, but with GNOME as well.
