Well there are basically two really good translators available
nfbtrans by Randy Fermenti and Turbo Braille by Chuck Hallenbach whom
I'm sure you are familiar with on the speakup list.

Nfbtrans is meant to be used as a feed through style translator where
you run the document through it and then send it to the printer with
lpr or your choice of app.  Turbo Braille is meant to be added into
the lp filter mechanism so sending the document to the appropriate
printer automagically translates and brailles it on the fly.

Grab any of Chucks posts which all have his web site at the bottom to
find Turbo Braille and you can download nfbtrans from the nfb download
page or write to Randy directly at n8kl at insightbb.com.
