Hi,

Kirk Reiser of the Speakup project was wanting to develop a lightweight
software speech synth, by starting with rsynth and working from there.
Some work was done on this, but I'm not sure where it's up to these days.
You can take a look at http://www.linux-speakup.org/tuxtalk.html but be
aware that this information is somewhat old, since a number of the things
that needed to happen already have.

Its main problem, in my opinion, is that rsynth sounds horrible. I'm not
aware of any work having been done on trying to improve its quality,
despite what Kirk says on the page linked to above about this being
relatively easy to do. I know he and some students did some initial
research into speech processing etc with a view to working on this, maybe I
need to ask him where it's up to.

Geoff.
