speakup won't talk

Hi,

I ran apt-get install gcj
and in another terminal I had hpodder running.
I came back to my system to see them both done, however, I heard no 
speech. I only had braille.
I re installed speechd-up and speech-dispatcher as well as espeak.

uname -a says that I am running linux computer name 2.6.18-4-speakup-686

What else should I try. Does anyone know what I can do?
Or is there a basic speech package I could use while trying to fix  speakup?

If someone could help me here I would greatly appreciate it.
