Hi,

I'm deleting your long post.  Your problem is not unique.  If you can 
establish what chipset your sound and video use, that would help.  
Apparently this is not unknown with Dell laptops from that era.  I found 
your problem particularly interesting, and I happened to read a mailing

Go to the mailbag, then past the first post.  The second talks about a 
Dell laptop with similar issues to yours.  Also try "lspci -vv" just in 
case.
